When breaking on top of a register call routine, "Step over" gets stuck on the call instruction and adds a breakpoint to the following instruction instead. Not sure if it's working as intended and is a limitation of the debug engine.

EDIT: It seems kernel mode debugger does not support stepping over too. Stepping over results in stepping into the call instead, for all types of calls.

P.S. DBVM is tons of fun. The chance of crashing seems overstated. Loaded all four cores with hyperthreading and no crashes. Until I did something stupid and switched debugger, freezing everything up.

if the routine called never returns (e.g exception/it modifies the return address) then it is possible this happens yes

if you know it'll happen, try a break and trace instead

as for dbvm, yeah, if your system works it'll likely work most of the times
