|
|
my dad took out his old hard drive from his desktop and put a new blank one in. i'm unable to boot from a usb with windows 7 or a dvd with windows 7 on it. keeps saying no bootable drive. i've gone into the bios and switched startup to removable drive for the usb and cd/dvd for the dvd and no luck.
what am i doing wrong and how do i fix this?

| if you're sure you're attempting to boot from the usb and it says 'no bootable drive' then you prepared the usb wrong

i must have prepared it incorrectly then. i simply used microsoft's "USB DVD download tool" to do all the work for me from the .iso file. i've never had any problems with this in the past.
what software should i be using to prepare the bootable usb?

oh, if you used an official tool its probably fine.
rather than adjusting boot orders boot directly from the USB via the boot menu

i tried that as well. usually it says to press any key (during start up) to boot from this device. when i do boot directly it gives the same error that there is nothing to boot from

The regular one wont boot you need a software to reformat the usb first. I used Rufus and had no problems with my windows 8.1 install on my newly built desktop. You plug in your USB after you backed up all the files on it and use rufus to format it to be bootable with the iso of your choosing. I just googled for the serial and have had 0 problems I went through 300 updates though the other night. Why are you going 7 instead of 8.1? I find it to be much more secure and faster. You can also set it to boot straight to desktop without the dumb ass metro screen.

you need to disable every other option that is not your USB
You also have to format the USB properly

yeah, so there's nothing wrong with the bootable usb or dvd i made. i tested them on other devices and work fine.
the message my dads pc keeps giving is "no boot disk has been detected or disk has failed"
i'm wondering if when he put the new hard drive in and took the old one out he did it improperly and that's causing the issue.
i just put different hard drive in and now there are no issues...

May be a case for RMA and local store for a new one for right now. I suggest he get a solid state if this isn't one it makes a world of difference. Now solid state isn't even the best because you can use M3 and put one straight into the motherboard, but that's expensive as hell. If his computer can't use sata there are some that use IDE as well, but it probably wouldn't be as beneficial.

try unetbootin.
also are you sure that you have working windows iso?
If its very old laptop, the problem can be if USB is formatted as fat
You can try LinuxLive creator and try and put linux distro on it, at least it will narrow down possible problems.
