nvidia for gaming
amd for gpu based computations
if it's workstation cards then you still have a debate on your hands

Not really.
It is Nvidia for everything. (But, you get what you pay for. It is more expensive)
Video Editing -> Adobe and Nvidia are married together.
3D Rendering with GPU -> CUDA has all the market.
Scientific Computation -> Nvidia Tesla has it all
Graphics Virtualization -> Nvidia Grid

photoshop can use hsa from apus
afaik when it comes to cpmputation, one might choose between amd/nvidia because of the type of ALUs they have

I am trying to search any good article that backs up openCL, but I am only finding old ones when CUDA was light years ahead from openCL and some ones that are completely biased and filled with fallacies about that CUDA can't do when in reality it can and does better.
I want to judge openCL as a same level competitor with CUDA, but there is a huge advantage that nVidia will always have over this open source solutions.
nVidia is propriety and makes huge amounts of money out of their software/libraries. For development and research those libraries and also the driver compatibility with many OS and other hardware, are the factors that make nVidia win by miles.
Of course it is restricted for usage, you have to have an nVidia graphics cards for it to work and depending of which card you have you have some limitations.
This however is not present with openCL which is made to work on any card without limitations. an example of this would be some instructions that are available only in tesla cards.
Also do not underestimate when I say that adobe is married with nVidia, they are to the point that there are features available only with cuda cards in photoshop, after effects, premier, etc. And the processing is optimized for CUDA operations only. that's why if you look at benchmarks you will see outrageous results like having a video render with cuda in 1 minute vs 5 minutes with openCL
