Going to learn a foreign language this year. Torn between Japanese and French. Japanese for obvious reasons, French because it's beautiful and the ladies love it.
i took french and really liked it, but i really like french cinema and hiphop so i had plenty of things to watch and listen to. if you don't think youd enjoy watching tons of french films then just take japanese so that you can immerse yourself in the language more

Kek. I am doing it for myself, just saying the fact that ladies love the sound of French (go ahead and ask around), not as if that's the only thing going for it, haha.
I don't mind watching French films. There are also French animes worth checking out. Plus, I would like to visit both countries at some point. Though you make some good points with handwriting (mine is bad) and the sheer length of time for Japanese.

Ladies will still steal your money and your sanity regardless of what language you speak to them. You could vomit $100 bills and they'd still ruin your life. Go with Japanese. _________________

If you decide to learn Japanese, the very first thing you must learn are the 46 Hiragana.
If you need help with any Japanese, just let me know. I'm at an intermediate level of Japanese. I can help with concepts google doesn't help much with.

Being able to speak any foreign language regardless of accent is appealing to females, and French is particularly liked, these are just the general opinions of the many girls I've met in my life. I'm pretty sure if you asked around you'd get similar statements.
Beyond that, the "ladies love it" line was meant as just an aside anyway, it's far from me saying "I'm going to learn french so women love me", chill. I have multiple reasons for wanting to learn the French language.

I actually learned my hiragana last week! I'm debating diving right into vocab/kanji or whether or not I should learn katakana first for loanwords and that if I do go down the J route. But I'll keep you in mind for looking for pointers.

french sounds really beautiful but so does japanese. they both have a really nice quality that makes just listening to them enjoyable. personally i like pronouncing french things more than japanese, especially words with 'tion' sound, but some things are very difficult to pronounce the correct way with the correct accent. keep in mind the r sound that youll have to pronounce like in this vid:

you also have to think about the difference between learning another language that is so close to english, and remembering to pronounce things in the french accent rather than just saying them like normal in english. youll have some preconcieved ideas of how to say things that may be incorrect. with japanese its so far different from english that this isnt a problem. think of things like the alphabet, if you think its easier to learn an entirely new set of characters and their pronunciation (which may be easier than french) than go with japanese, otherwise you'll be using the same roman characters but having to remember to pronounce them completely different (sometimes opposite) from english
i wish i had more free time and id continue to learn french and probably pick up japanese too. theyre the two most important cultures to me. theyre the two biggest cultures besides my own in terms of fashion, music, and movies, 3 of my biggest hobbies. both cultures are also somewhat xenophobic which i find entertaining but also respectable in current times. japan is enjoyable because of anime, but france has great literature and philosophy.

These are great points for both. I'm honestly just not sure which I'd like more regardless of it all, I just know it's a toss up between the two for many similar reasons as you. Was going to flip a coin, but this is just as well.
The xenophobia also struck me as humorous as I was thinking of it just today. No matter which language I learn, I will be generally less welcomed in either country than if I had gone almost any other language (save for middle eastern countries, which would probably be less receptive to me.)
if you want another random point, consider your heritage. you may have french ancestors or some shit, could be the tiny push in a direction to make your decision.
from what i hear as well is that if you at least try to speak french and do it decently they will be much more receptive in france. in japan theres some places that just have straight out signs that say no foreigners allowed. france also has much more american tourism I would assume.
another thing to consider is that if you do actually go to one of these places first based on the language, is the food you'll be eating. you'll be learning names of food and such and it'll make it easier to order and to also have a better etiquette
