God is whatever you want it to be. You can choose to make it real any time you want. But if you come to find that when you do and it doesn't help you become the best version of yourself, you can make it go away. If it does help you to become the best version of yourself, then embrace it, love it, live by it because it lives by you because you are it, and it is you.

If you're referring to the Christian God (note the inclusion of a capital G), then you are correct. That kind of god is somebody else's idea that they felt the need to impose on others simply due to self-righteousness.
