SSL is just a simple encryption from you to the server. It's nice because you can pretty much guarantee you're talking to the server, and no one intercepted your connection. It doesn't mean that the server itself is secure, just your connection.
The bad news is it's pretty easy (I believe, could be wrong) to intercept a connection, and when it gets an SSL request from your machine, the guy intercepting your connection will give you HIS SSL, and not the servers. If that happens, then yeah, you have a safe and encrypted connection.... to his computer... and all he has to do is forward all your information to the server (so acts like a proxy) and he has complete access to your decrypted info.

If I can get it for free, I would rather save the RAM

the encryption is always done by you and your client at all time

man in the middle ssl only works if you manage to break the chain of trust, such as getting the idiot user to add a rogue root certificate

Don't I need to put up a service to verify keys in the server?
