In the future I intend on relying on drivers to do my work but I have a couple of questions.

Where would you certify your driver? GoDaddy asks for $200/year does anybody know of a cheaper but as good company that offers driver certification?

What do you need to do, once you've become certified to certify your driver? do you just compile it and browse for it with some company provided application and click the certify button or do you need to add a code which windows can read to check to see if your vertified?

also, how does windows determine if your certified? does it check an online database? if so, your driver won't work for an internet shut PC would it?

globalsign also provides certificates for signing and is only $175 /year, but not sure how it goes for individuals

You basically just sign it using the wither the WDK signing tools (command line) or the company provided signer. I prefer to use the signing applet globalsign provides

When you sign your code you do a cross-signing with microsoft's cross-signing key.
Inside windows it then checks if the file is properly signed with microsoft's cross signing key (and your own) and if so, allow it
Windows does check an online database every now and then to see if a specific certificate is blacklisted, and if so refuse to load it, but it's not needed to get it loaded on a system with no internet

Also, a certificate is just a proof that you are the person you claim to be and where you live. It's not a certificate as in "a certified driver programmer". Even a malware developer can sign their code and windows will accept it. The problem is that with the signature everyone can find out who wrote it and where that person lives
