It's a post-AP class and we have an independent study project for fourth quarter. I'm working on it with a friend of mine, and she'll be doing most of the artwork and stuff. I need to decide a language we'll write it in. I was thinking probably C++, ideas? _________________

Ideas for the game? Or ideas for the language?
C++ sounds good, if you can do it.
Try making a game with creatures that you can evolve and train. Like Pokemon, but like... less RPG/story and more action. Also not turn-based fighting. _________________
No matter what language you use, use a game engine, otherwise it'll take you way to damn long. As far as what language, Ruby is fine for portability (even have RPGMaker, and scala isnt too bad either), but for performance heavy games, C++ is the only way to go. _________________

Oh sorry, I don't know why I forgot to mention what the game will be haha.
We're planning on making it either a top-down or side-scrolling RPG-type game most likely focused around combat with retro-style texturing and stuff, so not really a super unique idea. We need something that can be done in about a month and a half at most. Won't be a super performance heavy game, it'll be relatively light.
If I were working with a different person, I would probably have sided with C#/XNA, but she uses a Mac.
Aviar, any recommendations on a specific game engine to use? _________________

Alright well I got a little update from her. It's gonna be a single-player side-scrolling RPG where you play as one of four characters with different stats. There's a story involved, and as the game progresses you unlock new characters who play into the story. _________________

cryoma is right, using ActionScript 3.0 and Flixel is a pretty good option. If you wish to use Java, Innovation seems to know where its at (I'd still recommend using the Scala language though, it supports accessing standard Java libraries). For C++ theres CrystalSpace, Irrlicht (though it seems thats just a rendering engine) and Panda3D (supports accessing its API through Python as well). Ruby has RPGMaker, which can let you get things done quick, though I am not sure how original it lets you be (it always seems like all RPGMaker games have the same combat and top-down view). _________________

See my above post, you can just use the engine and not the maker if you so please, people have made some interesting stuff with it.
Like say, mode 7 (3d effect):
Oh theres also Coco2D (which I think is popular), OGE (The Open Game Engine), and PixelLight too. If you just need some really powerful rendering, Horde3D and Ogre are the best you can go.
P.S.: These are just some names I remember from when I quickly looked into 3D engines a while back, you can probably find ones that are particularly 2D. I would also guess that 2D specific engines would have a simpler interface, so you can get something done faster. _________________
