My experience with java games are the memory addresses for things such as life/score change constantly. It's helpful to set a hotkey in cheat engine to pause the process then search, then increment/decrement the value quickly and search again. Pinpoint the address quickly and use the pointer scanner to find the pointer. I didn't have much luck in some games because there wasn't always a pointer and the interpreted code would use the same instruction to write everything. But it is possible to find the value quickly by pausing it and changing it before the address jumps.
