Wow64GetThreadContext question.

Hi, I finally was able to get my hands on a profession version of visual studio, so I can play around with the x64 compiler.

I noticed however while trying to retrieve the context of a 64 bit process from another 64 bit process (using Wow64GetThread context) that my WOW64_CONTEXT structure define in winnt.h is strange. It's define liked so..

Am I missing something crazily obvious or something? Where is rip, rax, rex etc, and the 8 byte debug registers?

Yes I am on a 64 bit machine.

Use GetThreadContext instead

use Wow64GetThreadContext if you want to work with 32-bit processes but you know you're on a 64-bit os, and even then it's pretty useless as GetThreadContext also works on those

ok makes sense. But I'm lost on how a 64 bit process would be using EIP as its instruction counter, since its only 32 bits wide.

I used cheat engine to view the modules of the 64 bit process and the base module began at an 8 byte number. So provided the .text region starts somewhere after that, how could EIP possibly be valid?

Do I have the wrong context structure in my sdk or something?

That is why 64-bit doesn't use EIP but uses RIP instead

check the CONTEXT structure when the build is set to 64-bit
(or actually, if you're on vs2008 that won't work as it sucks and still shows you the 32-bit one, but trust me, it uses RIP, RAX, etc...)

Yeh that is exactly what I thought. But in my first post, that is how my structure looks. I have vs 2010 professional, and I am compiling with the x64 switch.

any chance you could post the 64 bit context and I could just add it in manually or something?
