|
|
The other night I was plugging in my laptop in my dark room, and managed, in my tired stupidity, to plug the charger into my (already broken) usb port for a few seconds. I smelled a burning plastic smell, immediately unplugged the charger, and continued to use my computer for about 20 seconds before it locked up. The screen locked up, mouse doing nothing, so I manually powered it down, let it rest for a bit, then tried powering it up again. It powered up, but after a bit it goes back to freezing.
It now does this anytime I try to power up. Important detail is that it starts, lets me get to my desktop and functions normally until it freezes again, so it's not a certain spot that it's stopping at, but rather a heat threshold that it seems to reach before it freezes.
What I'm asking:
What I possibly could have fried for it to boot up fine and then freeze after an amount of time?
Thank you if you read this, and hopefully you can help.

On this note, it seems to me you have made a shortage in your battery, or your laptop is now defective. Just buy a new battery and see if that helps because the one you have now is most likely fried.

But would it power up at all on battery power if that was the case?
I'm hopefully going to get it diagnosed tomorrow, but I figured the tech savvy people on here may be able to help me save some money.

True, but if I'm right. I'm thinking you made a defective startup somewhere. What I want you to do is start up in safe mode and tell me how that went ?
"Or" your final option could be that you start it up in safe mode and use a restart point to restore your pc back to an original state. If that doesn't help then I'm sorry, I'm not an all that smartz guy about Hardwares.

I tried safe mode and it still shut down after a certain amount of time.
What makes me think it's a heat issue is the fact that the longer I let it sit/the cooler it is, the more time I have before it shuts down. or, if I try it back to back, it gives me less time.
I guess I'll find out tomorrow, it would be pretty nice if it was just a battery shortage.

I actually just started it in safe mode and it worked a solid 5-10 minutes and then I shut it down on my own, and it froze in the process of shutting down, lol. I checked the battery immediately afterwards though and the battery was completely cool, the only heated part was towards the front, so I need to check the guide to see what's located in that section.

Do that. There is a problem, not with the battery but with your laptop.

That'll be the harddrive most likely. It's natural for the case above the drive to get hot as well. It's likely not the battery - it would simply lose power of the battery was fucking up. You might try booting to safe mode and running a harddrive stability test - each manufacturer offers their own, just google "<manufacturer> (eg western digital, hitacha) harddrive test"
But anyway, I'm not entirely clear on your first post.... you plugged your laptops charger... into a USB port? Link us to your laptop.

The HDD is actually easily accessible on my laptop, I took it out and checked and it's aesthetically sound and the smell definitely isn't coming from it. I'll look into the test, but I don't think it'd stay on long enough to run it.

make sure your fans are okay.
Take out one stick of ram and see what happens, then take out the other stick and put the first one back in and see what happens.

okay, so the freezing issue has somehow worked itself out, but now the USB ports don't work, SD card slot doesn't work, and the built-in webcam doesn't work.
Issue with whole motherboard, or is there hope?

Check your device manage for problems with the devices, try to reinstall their drivers.
