& ENDER's GAME VS The MATRIX the movie
ENG1
Spring Semester 2011
Journal Prompts

Journal #1, 2/1/11
“Those who cannot learn from history are doomed to repeat it.”
George Santayana, Essayist & Novelist

Explain Mr. Santayana’s quote in your own words. How does the above quote relate to the Capulets and Montagues from Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet? Give a detailed explanation. How might it relate to your own history?

Journal #2, 2/2/11
“My child is yet a stranger in the world,
She hath not seen the change of fourteen years.
Let two more summers wither in their pride
Ere we may think her ripe to be a bride.” (I:2:8-11)
W. Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet

Lord Capulet speaks in this quote to Paris regarding his daughter, Juliet, who though still very much a child, is yet considered eligible for marriage. Historically, women in Shakespeare’s day would have been married off at a very young age, though not quite as young as Juliet. Today, someone like Paris would be deemed a pedophile or at the very least a statutory rapist. What are some of the events that have occurred over the centuries which played a part in stopping the practice of marrying young girls off to much older men? How does it make you feel to know that you are the same age as Juliet when Paris presented his suit to Lord Capulet? Do you think an 18 year old has enough maturity to make a decision to marry? Why or why not? What age do you feel is the “right” age for people to marry? Explain your answer.

Journal #3, 2/8/11
"But he that has the steerage of my course
Direct my sail." (I:4:119-20)
W. Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet

How do the above lines from the play explain Romeo’s belief in fate? Do you think the Elizabethan audience would have understood Romeo’s plight? Why or why not? Why do you suppose Romeo leaves his fate up to the gods? Why does he not take responsibility for his own actions? Do you think it is easier to believe that “someone else” controls your fate rather than to take control of your life? How might your life be different if you had no say in your own future, but had to rely on the decisions made by someone (or something) else?

Journal #4, 2/9/11
“Young men’s love lies
Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes.” (II:3:71-72)
W. Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet

Explain the above lines that Friar Laurence says to Romeo. How “trustworthy” is Romeo’s love since he seems to fall in and out of love so easily and so quickly? Do you think Friar Laurence is fair in his assessment? Why or why not (and explain your response!!)? Do you believe in “love at first sight?” Why or why not? Again, explain your response.

Journal #5, 2/10/11
"Wisely and slow. They stumble that run fast."  (II:3:94)
W. Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet

Explain the above line from the second act of Romeo & Juliet. What happens when we try to do something before we’re ready for it? Are we likely to err? How can we keep from “injuring” ourselves? Can you think of a specific time in your life when you “stumbled” because you refused to slow down? What happened? What, if anything, did you learn anything from this experience?

Journal #6, 2/14/11
“Did my heart love till now?” (I:5:59)
W. Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet

How does Romeo and Juliet’s love for each other change them? Do you think that their love is doomed (try to disregard the fact that we already know that it is!)? If so, what gives us a clue? If not, why do you think it might have “bloomed,” despite opposition from their families?

Journal #7, 2/16/11
“This days black fate on more days doth depend.
This but begins the woes the others must end.” (III:1)
W. Shakespeare, Romeo & Juliet

How does Romeo’s response to Mercutio’s death further express his belief in fate? Why do you think Romeo continues to “blame” fate for the misfortune that seems to haunt him? Is Romeo’s complaint justified? Or is he simply refusing to accept responsibility for his own actions? What consequences does Romeo face with every choice he makes? What consequences can you expect when you make a bad decision?
Journal Prompts: Ender’s Game and The Matrix

Journal #8, 03/14/11
What happens when actions have no consequences? Have you ever been in a situation where you have behaved in a manner that is less than flattering, and gotten away with it? What was the situation and how did you act? Did you get away with it? How did that make you feel? Were you relieved? Happy? Remorseful? Did you feel guilty about it? If you’ve never done anything that you’re ashamed of, then think about how you might feel if you did do something and describe how you would feel.

Journal #9, 03/15/11
Have you ever felt isolated from everyone and everything? Why? What happened to make you feel this way? What did you do to change that feeling? Do you feel that way now? Why or why not?

Journal #10, 3/16/11
“I don’t need anyone. I can do this on my own.” How often have you used these words? Think of a situation where you said this. What happened? Did you need help and feel rejected? Were you able to take care of your problem on your own? Or did you have difficulties? Why do we find it so hard to ask for help?

Journal #11, 03/17/11
“Under all speech that is good for anything there lies a silence that is better. Silence is deep as eternity; speech is shallow as time." -- Thomas Carlyle

What is the difference between “speech” and “silence” in Carlyle’s quote? What does Mr. Carlyle mean in his juxtaposition of the two opposites? What, if anything, is “said” when we “speak” with silence? Why, do you think, is speech much more meaningful when it is emphasized with silence? Explain your answer.

Journal #12, 03/21/11
Think of someone you may know who has been separated from their family. Was it by choice or against that person’s will? If it was by choice, what happened to make them choose to leave their family? Was it a positive or negative choice? Was everyone happy with the choice that person made? Why or why not? If it was against their will, what were the circumstances? Were they able to resolve the issue? Why or why not? If you do not know anyone, then how would you have felt it you were separated from your family against your will? What might you do to get back to them?

Journal #13, 03/22/11
“[I don’t believe in fate] because I don’t like the idea that I’m not in control of my life.”
-Neo, The Matrix

Do you believe in “fate” (as Romeo did)? Do you think that your life is preordained? Or are you like Neo and believe that we make choices about the paths that we take through life? Explain your answers.
Journal #14, 03/23/11
“You taught me how to hide anything I felt.” (p.45) What do you think Ender means here? Who has “taught” him to hide his feelings? Do you hide your true feelings from people? Why or why not? Do you find it easy to let people know how you feel? Or is it easier to play a role, keeping your true feelings inside? Why do you think people have problems communicating their real feelings to each other? Explain your answer thoroughly.

Journal #15, 03/24/11
“You made them hate me.” Ender says this to Col. Graff after they arrive at Battle School. Why do you think that what his peers feel about him is so important to him? Are you affected by the opinions of your peers? Why or why not? Do you think that “peer pressure” is a real concern for teens, or is it something that was “created by Hollywood”? Explain your answer thoroughly.

Journal #16, 03/25/11
“Hallelujah. You’re my savior, man -- my own personal Jesus Christ.”
-- Choi, The Matrix
Who is your “own personal Jesus?” Who do you go to when you need help? Do you see this person as someone to inspire you? Are they someone who you might consider your spiritual influence? Why or why not?

Journal #17, 03/28/11
“Sometimes lies are more dependable than the truth.” --Ender, Ender’s Game

Do you think this is true? Why or why not? Why do you think that people are so ready to believe in lies? Is the truth really harder to take? To believe? Why do you suppose Ender said this? (How do you think he was feeling at the time?) How does this quote compare to Neo’s existence in the Matrix?

(Why does Ender say that lies more dependable? Do you agree with him? Why or why not? What is it about the truth that sometimes makes it difficult to accept? Explain your answer.)

Journal #18, 03/30/11
“Welcome to the human race. Nobody controls his own life, Ender. The best you can do is choose to be controlled by good people, by people who love you.” Valentine says this to Ender. How might this apply to the Matrix, where humans have no control? Do you agree with what Valentine says? Why or why not?

Journal #19, 03/31/11
Mazer Rackham says, “There is no teacher but the enemy.” Why? What does this mean to Ender. Do you agree with Mazer Rackham? Why or why not? How do we, as individuals, learn? Do we only learn “life lessons” from our enemies? Do our loved ones have any involvement in how we learn? Think of a time in your life where you learned a valuable lesson. How did you learn it and from whom? Does this lesson still affect you today? Why or why not?

Journal #20, 04/11/11
“Never send a human to do a machine’s job.” ̶̶ Agent Smith, The Matrix

According to Agent Smith, what do machines have over humans? Why can a human not function as easily ̶ or better, even! ̶ in any situation than a machine? Do you agree with Agent Smith that machines are better at certain jobs than humans are ̶̶ or should we be insulted by such a statement? When are machines better at a job than a human? Give reasons why this is so.

Journal #21, 04/12/11
“I believe that as a species, human beings define their reality through pain and suffering.”
̶̶ Agent Smith, The Matrix

What do you suppose Agent Smith meant? What does this quote say about human existence? Is it only through suffering that we exist? Do you agree or disagree? Why? Explain your answer. How might the above quote also apply to Ender’s Game? Does Ender suffer? Explain your response.

Journal #22, 04/13/11
“So you’re here to save the world.” ̶̶ Cypher, The Matrix

Who is “here to save the world?” And how is this going to be accomplished? Who is going to save Ender’s world? When your world is in trouble, who “saves” it for you? Explain your response.

Journal #23, 04/14/11
“...there are times when the world is in flux, and the right voice in the right place can move the world.” (p.128) Peter says this to Valentine while they are discussing power and how, historically, it has been achieved in the world. What power, if any, does your “voice” have? How can you, as an individual affect the world around you?

Journal #24, 04/18/11
“I’m a killer, no matter what.” ~Ender Wiggins, Ender’s Game, (p.241). How is this statement ironic? Why do you think Ender says it? Does he mean this literally or figuratively? What do you think makes Ender a “killer”? Why do we still sympathize with him, despite this fact?

Journal #25, 04/19/11
How do you think you would react if you were called upon to do something that you didn’t want to do, but that meant the safety of those who were important to you? Would you rise to the occasion, or would you pass on it? Why? Answer as honestly as possible.

Journal #26, 04/20/11
You are Ender Wiggins. You have just found out that you were used by the military to help them destroy an entire alien race. How do you feel? Describe your feelings as thoroughly as possible.

Journal #27, 04/22/11
“And the despair filled him again . . . Now he knew what he hated so much. He had no control over his own life.”
-- Ender’s thoughts, Ender’s Game

How would you feel if you had no control of your life? What if you were manipulated into doing something that you had no real desire to do, and it resulted in the deaths or destruction of innocents? Would you be able to live with that knowledge? What would you do to make amends?

Journal #28, 04/25/11
“Isolation is -- the optimum environment for creativity.”
-- Col. Graff, Ender’s Game

Do you agree with the above quote? Is Ender always in an isolated environment when he comes up with new strategies? What do you think is the impetus for creativity in human beings? Need we be alone to be creative? What muse inspires you to be creative (in any endeavor, not necessarily art!)? Explain your answer as thoroughly as possible.

Journal #29, 04/26/11
“In all the world, the name Ender is one to conjure with. The child god, the miracle worker with life and death in his hands. Every petty tyrant-to-be would like to have the boy, to set him in front of an army and watch the world either flock to join or cower in fear.”
-- Col. Graff, Ender’s Game

In a few sentences, compare the way that Graff feels about Ender in the above quote to the way that Morpheus thinks of Neo in The Matrix. The two protagonists are reluctant heroes who don’t really believe that they are the chosen ones, and yet they take on the responsibility of the survival of their race. How might you react if you faced the same kind of pressure that Ender and Neo faced? Would you choose to face the obstacle or ignore it? Why or why not?
