I heard that the main reason companies do a credit check on you and want you to sign a contract is so that they can give you phones at a discounted price. And if you choose to pay full price for a phone (or not get a phone at all), you don't have to pay a deposit or sign a contract.
I really want the Palm Pre 2, which I can get with the developer discount making it around $250. It'd be unlocked so I can use any carrier I want.
Does anyone know any carriers that would let me get service with no deposit if I don't get a discounted phone from them? My credit is horrible. I really like sprint, and although they have the cheapest deposit ($150), it's still too much if I'm not even getting a discounted phone from them.
I'll check out some places tomorrow but does anyone have any ideas where to go?
Edit: Seems t-mobile has "flexpay" which is basically their version of prepaid service. This would be perfect except they're probably a little pissed that I never paid them the hundreds of dollars for the early termination fee. Anyone know any other major carriers that do this?

Just pay the deposit, they give it back to you by the end of the 1st year, and it's a small boost for your credit

That's a myth. The only thing that improves your credit is having 2-3 credit cards that you keep a low balance on and make payments every month. Debit cards, bills, cell phones, etc... they can all hurt your credit, but none of them will improve it.
The deposit could be $300-$500 for AT&T.
