So basically children here have twice as many potential abductions to fear, as they do in the US. We have Sinterklaas who, on the fifth of December, rides his horse through the streets, accompanied by his black slaves which will distribute gifts through the chimney.

If you've been naughty, he will: snatch you from your home, spank you, put you into a large sack, and he will take you back to Spain. I don't know why he lives in Spain, but it's not rare for old people to want to live there. And according to legend, this man is hundreds of years old. And when all this is over, Santa comes.

The stupid thing is, Santa Claus is derived from Sinterklaas. During the time when New York was still owned by the Dutch, this tradition was introduced by us, and somehow morphed into Santa Clause. Then, Santa Clause was introduced in our country as an entirely new event. So basically we somehow ended up celebrating the same thing on (slightly) different dates.

I suppose I do understand why the NY'rs changed Sinterklaas' image, I mean the racism factor is pretty big. They tried to claim that the black slaves (called black Petes) were actually white people who got black from climbing down chimneys so much, but the following reasons are proof of that being a lie:

- When they arrive in the Netherlands, they are already black
- They all have the same negro hair (the curly hair, forgot the English name for it)
- Puffy red lips
- This image was created long before blacks were considered people

And I mean come on, it's pretty obvious isn't it (F5 if needed):

No they have to guide the horse, distribute candy to the children, and get all the presents made/bought, and then distribute them. The old man walks with them to collect anything delicious left by the children. The black Petes get nothing to my knowledge, aside from shelter and three meals a day.

Actually, no. Saint Nicholas is the origin of Sinterklaas (children call it Sinterklaas, adults here still say Saint Nicholas). I believe all of the morphs can be traced back to some Turkish saint, who is the origin of it all.

All I know is:

Saint Nicholas -> Sinterklaas (introduced shortly after word of this Saint reached Dutch grounds)
Sinterklaas -> Santa Clause (introduced when New York was still in possession of the Dutch, before we fucked up and thought trading it for spices was a solid idea)
