But you don't have anything to put on it, so it'd be a waste of money.

Buying something implies someone already owns it. If you had your own means of hosting a website, you wouldn't have to pay a single cent to set up a website on that domain. Of course, you have to pay a hosting company for their service, as well as rent a server. You're not making a purchase though.
