Boot up with a Linux LiveCD (or any type of bootable media), retrieve copy the files to an external storage. Reformat the machine afterwards.

For simplicity's sake: http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download
Select either option to create your bootable CD/USB (I'd prefer USB though much faster)

For XP:

Boot from XP disc and press R to start recovery console
In recovery console type in

Code:
"COPY X:\i386\ntldr C:\", press enter.
 "COPY X:\i386\ntdetect.com C:\", press enter
Where X is the letter for your DVD drive

When your done type exit and the system will restart

For Vista/Windows 7

Boot from OS disc, and select Repair
Wait for the disc to finish it's job and select Command Prompt (Recovery console)

In the command prompt: Type in

Code:
Bootrec /fixboot

When you have completed that, restart.
