So I'm seriously thinking about learning Japanese but I have no idea on where to start. Any suggestions on websites/downloads. Would it be best to learn to speak it first or write it? How long would it take (And I know this is subjective) to get up to a reasonable level (Able to hold basic conversations and such) if I put around 30 minutes a day into it?

That was one of the first things I checked, there was nothing.

I know a few people on here have learned it so I was just looking for a point in the right direction. I'll probably repost in GD later so I don't get stupid responses.

Watch series where they speak japanese (anime is great for this). Usually there are a few errors in the subs but if you really pay attention you could pick up the standard phrases real quick.

Except the sentence structure might be different between the 2 languages. Then he'll learn nothing.

Yes, words are easy to learn - you find structure in hearing them.

I have kind of noticed this. Names are easy to pick up and I know some words such as hello, thank you, idiot etc. And the more anime I watch the more I notice common sounds but I'm not usually able to put it to a word.

My brother learned from a school course. He doesn't recommend rosetta stone. Just wanted to take that off your list.
