All right, I have the item to enable the 3x3 grid. Why don't I have it? Sorry, this is like my first time playing Minecraft. Also where should I dig then?

Make stairs downwards. All of the good stuff is near bedrock, so once you hit the bottom, branch to the sides.

You need to place the item on the ground and then rightclick it.
So build a small base first.
And find yourself a mountain that's been sliced by a valey, you'll find a cave, then explore it. If it ends, dig 1 or 2 blocks in the direction it was heading to see if there's more.
