I've got a Westell stand alone DSL modem running on PPPoE along with a Linksys WRT54G v5 router. I've been using this router for quite a while aprox. 6-7+ years already and about a 1-2 years ago it's not functioning as it used to.
Here's the thing:

Every time at night, I'll do is power off my entire DSL connection that includes the DSL modem and router and turn them back on the next morning. I've been doing the same thing since I've got the router and when the router was a few years old, I can get instant internet access right away.

Now if I do the same thing, I'll need to power on/off a few time before it manages to connect to the internet. So I'll have to spend about 10-15 minutes every morning trying to get this thing working. And right now it starting to get annoying.

Could this be my router that's going out or something else?

try a different router, if not might be your modem.

It might be dying. Before you bother to get it replaced, try updating the firmware

I've already got the latest firmware and does not help

I've tried not to disconnect my DSL at night, but in the morning I'm still forced to power on/off due to somehow the router probably disconnected itself after a long period of inactivity.

I've tried with the modem by itself and I've got greater chance of connecting, still needs to power on/off but it took less tries to complete.

e.g. modem w/router=10 tries
w/o router= 2 tries

Now if it's the router any good N routers you guys suggest?
I've seen a Dlink DIR 632 which isn't out yet.

If it takes that many times (power cycling) get a IP then it's your modem.

Did a bit more testing with it and found out, if I just use my modem it will connect instantly. Now if I take my router and hook it up, the system won't have internet access. If I remove it then it does.

I'll have to do the same thing tomorrow to see if it's the same results.

Then it's your router then.

It might also be a DoS attempt.
I used to keep getting disconnected every few minutes, then I noticed in Security logs I had "Tues Jul 6 23:32:27 2010 1 Blocked/RST by DoS protection 192.168.2.5 "

That could be. Setup your router and check IP or mac addresses attached to your router.

I haven't got the logging enabled, just enabled now and I'll check tomorrow to see what it says.

As for the router, I've check out them Linksys and none of them seems good, they all have them internal antennas which I don't like however there is a model the E2100L which has 2 ext. antennas, but its only single band and there are 2 versions, one is Draft N 2.0 and the other is Certified N-maybe due to firmware update?

I've check out some D-Link and there's one that's really good dual band/Certified N/ and up to 450Mb/s. It's still on the West Coast and cost a whopping $230 bucks!

What I need are the following:

1. Must have external anteenas
2. Must be Certified N not Draft N or or other Draft specs
3. Must be dual band as I've got a notebook which run on 802.11a (5GHz)
4. A USB port to hook up a ext. HD to the network is a nice add on though that's optional.

Its a nicer router than you think. I had the speed booster version of the series, and I got a good signal from over 20 yards away. I was living in a different apartment than that rest of my family, and I was able to snatch it easily actually. I upgraded to the 120N when it first came out, now a better one is out for the same price I payed, and the 120N is half priced.

Looks like having an external antenna is out of the question as those are too expensive.

Saw a Belkin Play Max Wireless router which has a interesting feature called
Torrent Genie which let users continuing BTing even if their system is turned off.
Cons: Draft N 2.0

Cost is $129

never used Belkin before are they good?

I only had one belkin and it lasted a few years. Not sure how their newer models are but their old G routers were good.
