Where I'm at, it goes :
Grades 1-4 = Elementary school.
Grades 5-8 = Middle school.
Grades 9-12 = High School.

Pre-K is around 3, but that's optional
Kindergarten is after Pre-K
1-4th grade are grammar school
5&6 are middle school
7&8 are junior high
9-12 are high school
Then you can go to college, which is generally 4 years, then you can go for more degrees

And I personally was in one at one point that was 1 - 12. It really depends on the location.

k + 1-5 = elementary

education sucks more or less depending on the states. Some states require teachers to teach the students the information needed to pass a shitty exam, others require teachers to teach for college prep, others just to teach general education. Some states still want to teach creationism or "intelligent design". Soon, teaching Global Warming will probably be treated as something equally as false as int.design thanks to people not believing in global warming just because it's not man made or some shit like that.

In other words, the US school system teaches the political agenda of the individual states. There's little or no uniform teaching across all the states.

Kindergarten
0 - 9'th grade obligatory
10 is not obligatory but available for those who aren't ready for the next step
gymnasial studies 1 - 3g
university (varies differently, I'll be going there for 5~6 years).

Junior High is called Middle School (vice versa) here.
