When I play midi files there's no sound.
I've checked everything, the volume is up and unmuted, I've updated the drivers, and there's still no sound.
Attached is some info.

That's a really shitty "solution". Sound works, MIDI output doesn't.
OP, there are no other MIDI devices listed there? The MS GS synth driver is at Windows/System32/Drivers. You could try replacing it with the version on your install CD. As for alternative software synths, I have no clue.

how is that a shitty solution? Instead of messing around with hardware/ software drivers first, might as well see if converting MIDI into an mp3 file would work. I'm guessing you think that converting MIDI to mp3 lowers the quality during the conversion right?

Or perhaps he's just like me and would rather have it work then find solutions around it?

OP complains that MIDI sounds don't work. Now because MIDI isn't a common format for music people might listen to, I think we can assume that he wants MIDI for some older game or Guitar Pro-like program. Even if he did just want to listen to some tracks, making mp3s would just take a long time, waste disk space, and make the tracks useless with programs that work with MIDI.
Not to mention it would probably lose some quality in "conversion".

Now that I think about it, it's probably less a problem with the synth driver than program settings...

I'm a music composer and I work widely with MIDI.
Like my MIDI keyboard for instance.
Although I do convert it to a different format in the end, it's still crucial for me to have some MIDI support.
This problem is after a fresh install of XP by the way, it worked fine with the OS that came on the computer but after I had to reformat I used a different service pack or something.

As in, a newer service pack? Can you confirm that MIDI doesn't work for any program? I guess try replacing the driver file. Do you know if it worked before installing the keyboard driver (if applicable) or is it a problem with the new XP installation -- updated?

There's nothing complicated like that.
I'm fairly certain SP2 came on the computer, but I installed SP3 when reformatting.
I'll try playing a midi file in windows media player, MIDI-OX, anything that supports .mid and there's no sound.
I haven't tried replacing files or even installed my keyboard drivers.
