As the computer im currently using not being able to handle a game i like, where as this old computer can, i decided to take its position of being a paperweight and turn it into a computer again.
The problem is, when i booted it up, it gave me the error message that Hal.dll was missing and only this. Luckily for me, i found the recovery disks and was about to do the recovery.
The problem is, the recovery disks didnt boot. Instead, it went through 3 windows booting screens, a hal.dll error message, then booted up windows. Im extremely confused on how or why its doing this, but i would like some help. Is there any way i can force boot the recovery disks?
Much thanks, and any helpful information to get this running will result in a +rep.

run in safe mode, or also use the recovery disks and you can have a whole new computer.

Also, ben. The disks wont boot up auto. and i cant run it in safe mode because it skips that option.
Edit: Thanks Muffin! Hold on, i got the disks to boot up. If i can just get it to work from here, i'll let you know with a +rep

I don't think you understand how extremely vague your post is.

If it says hal.dll is missing, there's a good chance this is just the tip of the iceberg. In terms of core system components, it goes ntoskrnl (or the appropriate multiprocessor variant), hal.dll, ntdll.dll, then all the critical system drivers like acpi.sys, ntfs.sys and such. When system files go missing, they don't tend to just go one by one - it's a mass failure. If hal.dll is missing, who knows what else is gone.
Just start fresh - format, re-install OS.

To burning, yes, im going to recover the hard drive, but my parents want to get something off it first.
As to elpacco, Im being vauge because i dont really know that much on whats going on. As also, i didnt screw it up. We got it from a cousin a long time ago and it was already broken, so i honestly cant answer this.
I'll reinstall the OS in a bit. Anyone know how to crack a password on the system?

Sure, easiest way is to boot from an Ophcrack live CD. There is a program you can install from a live Linux distro, but that's only better if you have one laying around.
