So I was thinking, my main laptop has like a shitload of browser data on it. Would it be a good idea to take my old Acer and dl Chrome OS on it, just for browsing?

It's entirely up to you, though I think you need to build a USB image yourself from a Linux system. If you can do it, try it out. If not, don't worry about it. Chromium OS isn't really that far along and the process now is pretty technical. And I don't really agree with Google's approach for how "an operating system should be".

Chrome OS is supposed to be a good netbook OS, but I have no idea about its driver support.

it's basically like installing a hackintosh on a PC, there's always going to be problems whether it's going to be driver support or the other billion things that could go wrong as you're installing an OS that was custom made only for google Netbooks

Isn't it just based on the Linux kernel, but (for now) specifically targeting some hardware? I'm not sure about this...

yes, it's basically like the Mac OS. You aren't allowed to install it on any other machine expect a google netbook, but obviously people know ways to get around this.
which is why there wouldn't be any driver support because google wouldn't make drivers for hardware that their netbooks don't even use
