Recently I've been having a problem with my comp. Occasionally the screen goes black (monitor stays backlit) and will stay black until I turn it off. The computer is on though and not in sleep mode or anything (fan is running etc)
Since I'm terribad at fixing problems, lmk what I need to do please to figure out what's wrong and how to fix it.

| My friend had problems like this a few weeks ago. He couldnt fix it so he took it for a specialist or something to looks at it, and turned out there was something wrong with the montherboard. Im not saying it is, but it could be a possibility.

does the monitor lose signal?
does the computer actually hang when this happens? (ie if music is playing, it will lock up)
this smells of power supply to me.

Can you try a new hard drive (ie, new operating system) and see if it persists?
If the problem stops when you use a new hard drive with a different operating system on it... We know it is a software problem.
