How do I cheat?

I want to change the action of an button in an exe file
for example you have word or sth. else and you press "save" there will pop up a message

i think i had to code a dll or sth, that displays the message (im able to code in C++ or pascal)
but how can i change the exe to do my code instaed of the savecode?
is there an tut anywhere?
