'Cept I carefully counted and made sure that the pixels on my sprite coresponded decently with the picture I referred to. 'Cept I have no fucking idea how to "trace" things and do not want to find out.

It's the equivalent of tracing. If you're making your picture look almost exactly the same by counting pixels, you might as well trace it. The end result will be the same.
If I were you, I'd just draw it, without your "corresponding pixels" bullshit. Use a reference picture or not; your choice.
