It adds atmosphere and effects to a game but is it really that important in games?

Absolutely, the music is part of the dialogue.
Your music choice really impacts the overall value of your game.
Knowing what music to use in what places, or where to not use music at all, is crucial.
I'm creating an entire OST for my game.
