Have you ever played an iphone game? the controls are awesome.
Every game has it's own controls to fit the game style, if it's driving, it uses the accelerometer to steer, if it's some hack n slash dungeon crawler, it usually uses a joystick and buttons made for jumping, attacking etc. Every game draws it's own control system when needed.
Let's say that diablo4iphone has a mini-game. Usually it would temporarily remove the normal diablo controls and replace them with the mini-games controls. when finished, your game would continue with the original diablo controls.
EDIT: But laptops are huge as fuck.

yes i have, and the moving scheme is terrible, and your thumb usually covers quite a bit of space, blocking quite a lot of the screen
