The end of the earth can happen at any time. If dealing with a meteor, then it can be calculated, but also easily avoided.

I dunno, if we were to discover a meteor was heading for us (one that could end the planet, that is), I don't think there would be any way of stopping it.

We would only be able to determine that a meteor would have a threat of colliding with us only a few days before it would happen, which would be by the time they finish the calculations.
