Yeah... so I checked my task manager and it appears that Windows 7 has used ALL of my RAM as cache. I've never seen this before. Is this a good thing? I know that if I need more RAM for a program it will get rid of some of the cache, but I've just never seen it use so much.

you wanna pay attention to "Physical Memory" near the bottom.

Windows 7 WILL release any cache memory to make space so yeah.

As the saying goes "unused ram is wasted ram"

Yes the RAM usage is normal.

RAM is FAST, far far faster than your HD could ever hope to be. As such, it will try to make decisions of what to cache based on your usage habits (as in keeping more commonly used programs in RAM over those that are not). It's also a bit smarter in Windows 7 and will try not to shit on your harddrive by immediately caching the shit out of everything it wants to the second you so much as log in. 64 bit versions of windows are also more aggressive with how much they will use.

It will free memory as it deems fit, if another program requests memory, then it will free what it needs and fork it over, simple as that. If you really care enough, you can watch it in action in the resource monitor. It shows up as one of the svchost's, so if you see one reading like crazy, that's probably it.

I understand how 7's RAM caching works. It's just that it usually caches about 1gb. This is the first time I've seen it cache all of my RAM. I've never seen "Free" read 0.

Unused ram is wasted ram.

Have we not learned this with Vista?

Uh, it's using less than 50% of your RAM. The other 700MB or so looks be being stored in the page file.

Why complain? It's not like having more unused RAM is going to magically make your computer faster. Like everyone else said, unused RAM is wasted RAM.

I know. I want it to do this more. Usually it just caches about 1GB. And my page file is turned off, so... it's all in RAM.
