Recently I've been wanting to buy a new computer because the backlight on my laptop went out, my dad seemed ok with it until today and forced me to use our computer that we bought in 2001 with Windows XP Service Pack 2. I bought a Belkin Wireless USB adapter so I could have internet connectivity and it works fine, but the only thing that can connect to the internet is IE6. The first thing I did when I got the internet up was go to download Firefox only to find out it couldn't connect to the internet. Later I found out none of my other applications like Windows Live Messenger couldn't connect either. After at least upgrading to IE7 for tab capabilities I found that it wouldn't connect either which suprised me so I downgraded back to 6 so I could at least do basic things online. After allowing the Windows Live Setup in Windows Firewall it could connect and it installed and put in place the correct exceptions for it so I could use Windows Live. It was the only application I've been able to get to connect other than IE6 and even though I put Firefox in exceptions it still won't connect. I don't think its a virus being that this computer has been offline for 2 years now and worked fine while directly connected to our router. What's making this computer not connect with anything?
