So, I researched the Playstation 3's over heating problems. Sony, 9 out of 10 times, claims it to be due to in-proper maintenance from the operator, dust build up, in-proper placement, and bad ventilation around the system. This all made seance to me, and being the cheap-o I am, I don't want my PS3 to burn out like others have, now my room is dusty, I mean DUSTY, if I let my laptop sit overnight I have to wipe it down from all the crap that clings to it. Now my PS3 stands upright, dust is bound to fall into the top vent and stick to the inside. So, I started by the "fan boost" cleaning method. This is controversial on weather it is good and works; or if it is bad for your PS3. Turn your PS3 off at the back of the system with the main power switch, hold your fingur over the eject button, then turn the system back on and hold your fingure over the eject button, the fan will hit top speed for 30-60 seconds then go back to normal, what this is REALLY for is to eject a stuck disk from an already burnt out PS3 system. This did not, as I anticipated, clean anything. So, my next option was to tear it apart. This is easly done and, if you are careful, wont harm your ps3. I tore my PS3 apart to the very bottom, wich if you are curious contains a 5-6 inch fan, and two heat sinks, a GPU and a CPU one, after taking apart the bottom and looking for dust in and around the fan, and the heat sinks, I found nothing, the only dust I was able to find was in the base of the PS3 under the fan and it was hardly any that would make you sneeze. Now after re-asembling my PS3, I have come to the conclusion that it has probably the WORST air flow through the system of any other modle. This new Ps3 Slim better have a Kick ass heat sink set to keep it from giveing you the YLOD (yello light of death) Like the 3rod (three rings of death) from the 360.

The bottom of my PS3 is useuly VERY hot because the heat sinks are so close, why would sony make such a bad air system for there PS3, technically speaking my ps3 should have been filled with so much dust it caught on fire... I don't recomend takeing apart your PS3 to clean it unless you know what you are doing, I am thinking about doing some case modifications on mine seance the 1 year warranty is up, and buying a new heat sink conductive paste. I'll let you know if I keep my system going for a while longer Lol. Just some things that ran past me while I was working on my ps3 I wanted to share.

I don't see what you think is wrong here. You thought there was dust in your PS3 due to the fact that you have a dusty room. So you take it upon yourself to take it apart and clean it manually, even though you have had absolutely zero problems with it whatsoever (i.e. freezing, restarting due to overheating, etc.). Then you find out that there wasn't even any dust in it. I think that by doing that, you caused more harm than good there. Also, the YLoD is never talked about because it happens less than 1% of the time.

Just read there's no Linux (alt. OS) support.
Not that I'm really into consoles for anything.
