|
|
Whenever I start windows xp, I can't click on anything until I press ctrl+alt+delete, once I press this everything runs normal except that I can't drag and move icons on the desktop or files in folders, they just stay where they are and don't move. The weird thing is that this also happens after I reformat, it works just fine until I reboot for the first time and this problem comes back... It's a fresh install no drivers or anything installed... there's nothing except a pure xp install on the hdd.
This problem does not only happens on this pc but also on my other one... my other PC have Win7 installed but i still have to press ctrl+alt+delete to be able to click anything, but on win7 i can atleast move the icons but if I install xp on this computer the same problem occurs. This have never happened before... anybody have an idea on how to fix this??
edit: Just wanted to add that I have tried to install all updates from microsoft update but the problem still exsists. And I've found lots and lots or more bugs that must have the same cause... like that yellow acitvex thingy never shows when I want to install ie flash player and links in internet explorer does not work unless i right-click->open in a new window.. :/

The problem might be from the windows installation disk itself.
You said you reformatted and the problem persisted? Do a couple hash checks or whatever it is on some of the major files on the disk. That's all I can say about your desktop problem.

It's the same thing when my drivers are installed. I have sp3 and all the latest upgrades for xp installed along with sound card drivers, graphics card drivers, motherboard drivers etc.. and I don't think there's a problem with the windows disc because I have 2 xp discs and I get this problem whatever I choose..
Edit: ok, I just reformated again and everything worked exactly how it should, didn't have to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to be able to click on anything and icons were moveable. Then I restarted the PC and when it started again and the problem were back... I had to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to be able to click on anything... but then I noticed there were only 16 processes active and before I restarted there was 18 active processes, could it be that it just fail to load everything it should? If so is there a way to see what processes should be loaded when the PC boots?

Maybe someone took a picture of your desktop, then set it as your background, then hid all the original icons.

Did you even bother to read my damn post?
If you reformat and the problem persists, it could be from the installation disk. If you have two separate partitions (I keep my shit on a separate one myself) then something infected there could be effecting your desktop, then springing to life every time you reformat.

I've made an iso-image from my xp disc and did a md5 checksum on the image file but I can't find a checksum to compare it with. I have only one hdd on 15 gb and 1 partition so it's probably not a virus unless it hides in that 8 mb space windows needs to format...

Check MD5s of the files.
Either copy them from the CD, or extract them from the ISO.
If it's a SP2 disk, compare the checksums with those from another, and so on.

The problem is gone now I don't know if it's just temporary or permanent but it's gone now. I fixed it by changing mouse ... but I still find it hard to believe that a mouse can cause a problem like that .
