I also aspire to one day become capable of reading.

That is a B in the poll.

I hate these topics. Why can't you just go read one of the other 5000. The outcome is always the same. C++ always wins.

Don't learn any of those. If you have no experience learn a scripting language like Perl, as hyphen said. Perl teaches a lot of good techniques. Then learn C++, it is popular and Perl has a similar syntax. Then you can continue C++, or whatever suits your needs (you should know by then).

I suggest this over VB because VB is evil.

They're both C-syntax languages; hence "C++..[having] a similar syntax".

Anyways, OP, just go with C++, following closely with WinAPI.

I'd not suggest you learning Perl first. It's kinda complicated for a beginner.

If you want a scripting language, go for Python. C for imperative programming and C++ or Java for object-oriented stuffs. Also Java might easier to pick up than C++, because it has lots of ready-for-use classes.

My history (when it comes to programming):
C.
C++.
Side projects, because of school: Java, Python.
I've experienced with other languages too, but if I had to write a hello world w/o, I wouldn't be able to. I'm fairly good with those mentioned above, that's why it's reasonable to only mention those.

Which one is best? You can't say that a language is better than another. They'r all good to diffent things.
