Paying for an advantage of any sorts is a horrible idea and should never be done, if this is what you're getting at.

pay to play is almost always a brake unless your price is low and your game is awesome enough for people to really want to pay for it.
a nice example is WoW but now think... there are not many successful and popular pay to play games.
myself I only consider WoW and EVE successful in the pay to play environment.

but ragnarok haves 2 servers, free to play and pay to play
I used to play on ragnarok sakrai server or something like that when it was first released some years ago.

Mochi is turning flash games into pay to play with Mochicoins.
You buy them with paypal, and spend them in games for upgrades.

The used to be 100% pay to play.
There was so many private servers that i think they was forced to do that.
I played years ago as well, then ran my own server also.
Even did some map alterations and scripting or NPC' and games etc...
Those where the days... /

I used to play in the sakrai server (( original free to play))
and that was good times, never got to see a hacker and it was like a community with many ppl, the lvl wasn't important, the most important thing was to make your character good looking since it was more like a social MMO. good old times

I think pay to play is sometimes ok, and sometimes not, depending on how you use it.
First off, microtransactions are NEVER a good idea, they will make a game less popular almost immediately. Pay to play as in monthly membership depends on how you do it. If it is like RuneScape, where you can only use pay to play items and advantages on pay to play worlds so members' advantages aren't as noticable to free players then it is fine, but when it is like club penguin where the advantages are constantly shoved down your throat, than that would also aid to killing a game.
