I installed L4D and spent 5 hours downloading updates for it, and I can't even play the game -_-... When I start it up, i gets about 2-10 seconds through anything, then I get a sound loop, computer locks up, and then it automatically reboots my computer, any ideas? I have an ATI x1950 (I know it's old).

Set the launch parameters:
-w 800 -h 600 -windowed -nosound
also try changing this
-dxlevel "7"
-dxlevel "8"
-dxlevel "9"
(some cards will only do 9)
This happened in tf2 on my integrated graphics laptop and by changing resolution it worked.

I reinstalled it several times and tried some stuff so I could stay at the menu for a bit, then was able to change a few settings so it would work.
