I was wondering what ways they're were to protect my network. Disabling SSID broadcasting and MAC Filtering is fine for protecting against the average user, but to more experienced users they would be able to easily get into my network. What other methods can I use to protect my network? _________________

well if you're not broadcasting, it's going to be harder for people to hack into your internet, i guess. use a strong <forgot the word> like wpa and turn off your router when you're not home? i'm not sure really, where i live there's no one smart enough to steal my internet, and even if they were, they probably won't get a signal. _________________

Like I said all those things are precautions you can use for a normal user. But Kismet can pickup networks that aren't broadcasting they're SSID. Strong WPA passwords help a bit. _________________

| Whether or not the SSID is hidden, no one's going to want to crack a 64 character hex WPA key. |

are you trying to protect your network from
- people wandering outside your location (house? apartment? company?), or
- people inside your location (e.g. mom? expert crax0r dad? other employees?)
you can't trust technology. you will have to manually configure individual connection requests yourself on top of a PSK key. _________________

WPA-PSK2 using a 128-bit key should be sufficient. nobody will be able to "happen to wander around and get lucky". If you're concerned, though, for whatever reasons you may have - remember that many routers have linux firmware. You can code yours to a customized version that requests keys of different length and keys of different checksum.
What if you INSIST your router on getting 129-bit keys?! nobody will be able to crack that. _________________
