Isn't an mp5 file some sort of game? As far as I know, there's no such thing as MPEG 5-layer.
As for using it, XP's mass storage device drivers should have covered it, but you could try installing a pack just in case. Use this driverpack and use Warm Snow's deployer to install. (Put the driverpack in the dp folder and run DPInstaller_WSED.exe.)
Name/model of the player?

but anyways my friend bought it online without knowing what the model number is, what name, what nothing. he just said it was good and could play FLV youtube vids. i wish i didnt take his word for it
is there any other way to get it to work? some troubleshooting tips?

do you have to do anything to the mp3 player to make it communicate with the computer? like disk mode or something?

There is no such thing as an MP5...
That is a sub machine gun...
No wonder why windows can't recognize it...
Window's get shot so fast they don't even know what hit them...
Lol just joking....
Have you tried synchronizing....
My friend bout an MP4 player and when connected to window's, in My Computer it couldn't be seen...
There is a couple of way's to synchronize...
Media player
Itunes
Briefcase(same is folder but it sync's)
Sorry I don't know exactly how to synchronize but it'll be easy...

Where's the link you bought it from?
That's like buying a car from a random person you don't know with no kind of background checks on the car and legal paperwork.
