Alright, well I don't expect TOO much from this forum, but I've noticed that it's become more popular recently and wanted to see what you guys think. Remember, this is on preference, mostly. Don't get too worked up about things anyone says.
P.S.
I won't be hurt if this thread just (dies). xD

I've only used the GNOME and XFCE desktop environments so far.
Oh god, XFCE.
Fuck. FUCK. That sucked SO much for me.
I prefer GNOME, but KDE looks great to me and I'll probably give it a go.
I got in touch with XFCE when I used XUbuntu a year ago for a couple of hours. Sucked.
Using Ubuntu now, GNOME <3

I never bothered with XUbuntu, but I've heard things. You might try Kubuntu (although you could just as easily install KDE from SPM and replace gnome. I'm using Ubuntu right now as well. Only really go on Windows for heavy-core gaming at this point.
EDIT:
Thanks for posting, half expected nobody to reply.

Defenitely gnome if your experienced, but KDE is much better for noobs/Windows fanbois.
Gnome + Compiz + XGL = Epic Win

Gnome has gotten DEAD SEXY this last year. I ran linux for a year and bought a new faster gaming computer and never turned my linux comp on again till about a year later.
Now Gnome has beryl-effects built in and its pretty sweet.
But honestly Gnome is too much of a resourse hog for my tastes. KDE... that is like 2x the resource hog that gnome is... not to mention it's crappyness.
xfce is nice, but its simple in a bad way.
Fluxbox is what I like. I usually do my app coding (general hobby coding stuff) on linux just because everything runs smoother and its easier to keep everything not feeling cluttered.

Not my screenshot, and that one is cluttered, but its the basic looknfeel of it.

Yeah, the Beryl (now Compiz-Fusion) makes for a great desktop environment. While Ubuntu isn't exactly a superlightweight OS, I find GNOME quite efficient, not to say that KDE isn't.
Fluxbot looks really loud to me, rough around the edges. Although I am quite picky sometimes about the way a desktop/theme look together. I strive for perfection (often means keeping defaults).

No that was just the particular screenshot owner's theme.
sudo apt-get install fluxbox-desktop (think that is the command)
Then logout and login to fluxbox and play round with it. It has several pre-made themes, and can easily be customized...
There is also the "one-click" themese like you find for gnome and kde :-]
It's a very lightweight x windows manager. Default is blank back, bar at top, nothing else. rofl.
When I use desktop themse I always make them look as much as windows 2000 as possible.
For years I ran 95, 98, 2000, me, xp, and linux and my computer was too crappy for the flashy defaults of xp and above. So I always used the classic theme, with default coloring. So even though I have a beefed up computer now, capable of running aero, gnome(not xgl becuase of my gpu being specifically not codable for it ), comfortably, I still run the classic theme. xD

I would say GNOME is better mainly because of Compiz-Fusion. But KDE is fine too. Makes it easier for Windows user to transition to linux.

I think Ubuntu is the worst linux Distro out there...
I guess it's easier for people switching from windows to linux to use Ubuntu... but it is terrible... Try any other Distro... Even Debian.
IMO... Gnome is fine. KDE isn't that bad either. I switch between them depending on what distro i am using.

I like Ubuntu, has all the stuff I need built right in. Really easy to customize, and they're are lots of tutorials out there. Also, it takes up very little RAM and CPU usage on my computer.
