you're buying 2 4870x2s for a 1280x1024 display?
wow...
I would be using at least 1920x1200 (24")

At least a 30" if you want to do that kind of setup.
Mobo, Asus Rampage II Extreme
Intel X48 supports CrossFire X with both PCIe slot running at full speed
x16,x16
Alternative Asus Maximus II Formula or any P45 chipsets with 2 PCIe x16 slots that supports CrossFire x.
All P45 chipset boards including the MIIF runs their slots at half-speed when you set CrossFire/X mode: x8,x8.

If you're gaming at 1280x1024, a single 4870 or 4850 will be plenty. Multi-GPU solutions don't scale well with low resolutions.
If you have that much money to throw around, you should really just get a single 4870x2 and invest in a nice monitor.

Exactly, for 1280, a singel 4870 should be enought.
