Maybe it's getting really hot and shutting down without warning to protect the hardware?

maybe your hardware's just reaching the end of its life. i've got an old computer at home that we've had for a while and we get random reboots sometimes, a bit like you.

As you use your machine, the thermal paste on your cpu dries up and that can cause the system to overheat (shutdown).
Remove your cpu fan, clean out the thermal paste on the processor and the bottom of the heatsink. Then use 100% Isopropyl alcohol to clean the bottom of the heatsink to remove any remaining thermal paste.
next apple a rice size amount on your cpu and use a flat object (business card) and spread it evenly and smoothly across the entire surface of your cpu. After than reinstall your cpu cooler and run a cpu burn in test with error correction disabled for 1 hour and see if your system shuts down or not.

Note: If you got dual core for quad core you must open cpu burnin in for each core. Then go into task manager and set the cpu affinity for each core.

Use speed fan or other cpu temp reading program to monitor its temperature.

I use 91% Isop. alcohol and an alternative is to use the Artic Cleaner solution. When cleaning do not dump alcohol directly on it, use a soft cloth!
