|
|
Hey, i need some suggestions on external hard drives. Also, what is the fastest way to transfer the files? eSATA, Firewire, USB etC? I think i have all of those... I am not 100 percent sure about firewire though...
Thanks!
Probably not bigger than 1TB but not smaller than 250gb.

AFAIK, the FireWire (FireWire 400 I believe) is a bit slower than USB 2.0 (480Mbit/s) in most cases, and is a bit faster in video transfer. Otherwise, it's pretty even between the 2. But when you add eSATA and SATA 3.0Gb/s, then it's a whole other comparison. You'll also have to factor how well the hard drive can transfer, for example, one of the fastest drives in the market, Intel's SSDs, can transfer 250MB/s, doesn't even take advantage of all the possible bandwidth of SATA 3.0Gbit/s.
The next-gen standards will be far faster, USB 3.0 is expected to be capable of 4.8Gbit/s, FireWire S3200 is capable of speeds of 3.2Gbit/s, and third-generation SATA at 6.0Gbit/s. But "next-gen" is still years away.

In terms of specs, Firewire 400 (IEEE 1394A) is slower than USB 2.0 (480Mb/s), but it does not poop out like USB when you're doing intense
video encoding/transfering because it's got a better sustained transfer rate.
Firewire 800 (IEEE1394B) on the other hand is not common so far only Apple has it on their products.
If you want to use the fastest port for a external hard drive go with eSATA.
One downside about eSATA is it does not provide native power, like USB.
Once a client of my bought in a external HD and it got
Firewire A, USB 2.0, and eSATA. Running HD tach eSATA came out tops.

I'd say get a HDD with eSata cable.
For size in your case i'd go for 500/750/1000 GB.
My opinion is go for a Western Digital.

| Get 2+ 1TB hard drives and RAID 0 them. Get eSATA because it's the fastest, but any interface will work. I have yet to see a hard drive transfer more than 1 gigabit/sec.

Get an internal OEM hard drive and a Antec HD external enclosure. You save lots on those pre-external ones.
Antec MX-1
