| Yes. I heard they passed the first line in a clockwise direction; but it broke down before they were scheduled to do anti-clockwise.

Hold on, I'll find you some.
| Quote: | Geneva, 23 September 2008. Investigations at CERN following a large helium leak into sector 3-4 of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) tunnel have indicated that the most likely cause of the incident was a faulty electrical connection between two of the accelerator’s magnets. Before a full understanding of the incident can be established, however, the sector has to be brought to room temperature and the magnets involved opened up for inspection. This will take three to four weeks. Full details of this investigation will be made available once it is complete.

It's true, there is a very very small chance of it creating a black hole, about the same chance as winning the lottery every day of the week in a row.
Of course, if this were to actually happen and it did create a black hole, it would take 10,000,000 years to absorb 1/10,000th of a gram of matter.
tl;dr tell your friend to stop believing everything he hears from fearmongering conspiracy nuts on the internets, in the 1 in 50,000,000 chance a doomsday scenario is created, it won't be within our lifetime, or our kid's lifetime, or their kids...
Back on topic, I think we all knew it was gonna break. Look at all those millions of individual parts, the chances of all of them functioning properly is about zero. The machine is simply too complicated, and too advanced for our time.

| Yea this was on discovery channel, something broke and liquid helium leaked everywhere so its gonna take 2 weeks to get a safe temperature and oxygen level for workers to get in and fix then another 2 weeks to cool it back down to temperatures where it can work.
