Cheat Engine

I'm working on another trainer on large RPG game but have run into
a little problem.

After I successfully find the address I want, I scan for it's pointer, and then
the pointer's pointer until I finally get the base pointer. However, on the
3 hacks i've tried to do so far, the pointer doesn't point to the address I want.

It works at first, sometimes works when I load another save game or when I
close the game, but after a while it stops working.

Could someone explain and tell me how to find the base pointer that will
always work?
