Do you already have the SLI capable motherboard?
If not, then you surely do not have enough cash my friend
If you DO, then get three 512MB 8600GT's. Should run you about $400, and your games will be smoother than a baby's bottom

yes my mobo is SLI capable and up to 3 GPUs. I think I already stated that.
Is 3 8600GT better than 2 8800GT?

I'd just go with 2 9800GTXs
Tri SLI isn't that popular.

Not even close. Get 2 8800gt's, that will give you the best performance for your price point.
More does not equal better, SLi is still pretty inefficient. Not to mention, 8600's don't support tri-SLi, and for good reason.

Really? I thought all Nvidia cards were capable of Tri-sli.
And i thought 3 8600's were better than two 8800's, time for me to do more research

4850's are the way to go, if he has a board with an Intel or AMD chipset.
If you have an nVidia chipset however then 8800gt's are the only way to go, even though they'll get their ass handed to them by two 4850's.

| SLI is overrated, the performance increased does not equal up to the price you pay for it.

SLI should be avoided when possible
You're lucky if you're always getting a good performance boost out of it. You have to keep up to date on drivers / profiles.
Look up microstuttering as well. ATI seems to think they can fix it, but we'll see.

That is simply misleading, when buying any high end product, spending more will never give you a linear increase in performance.
SLi used to be very inefficient, but it's gotten better, and Crossfire is even more efficient. There are plenty of price points where dual GPU's make sense.

Crossfiring a pair of 4850's will give you the best performance at your price point. I can't recommend a specific board as I'm short on time here, but anything with an Intel chipset and at least 2 pci-e 16x slots will work just fine.

I don't think it has to say that, just needs 2 PCI-E slots.
Also, with their new cards (4850 and 4870) they've fixed the AF issues, so they are pretty fucking awesome.
