it doesn't really matter. They are all the same, some just come with other tools and different default settings than others.

Also, you could build your own distro using LFS(Linux from scratch), and just pick all the tools and apps yourself.
I myself use fedora core though

Well when i first used linux, it was so long ago, i even don't remember what distro it was, i just remember penguin.(year was like 1996)
But when i first had linux in my own computer, it was fedora core, but i had many troubles with it, due to i had pppoe connection without router.
Next was Ubuntu, i installed it because everybody were speaking about it, and live-cd came to mailbox.
So in general, ubuntu is the easiest, but fedora stays my favorite(i have a router now).

Slackware or LFS.

Only Sheeple use ubuntu/kubuntu/xubuntu.

LFS is problem to hard for an average windows user...

Slackware is problem very hard for an average window user to install...

If your new, use ubuntu... Then move on from there.

Sorry, but if your friend can't even handle something as simple as keeping his Windows box free of viruses, I can't say that I'd expect him to understand how to install and maintain any Linux distro.

He should just stick with Windows and get better anti-virus and be smarter about what he downloads, but since nobody ever listens when it comes to this topic, just get Fedora.

Windows != Vista. Yes Vista is a shitty OS, we all know that. But it's not the only Microsoft based OS so I'm not sure why MS hating fanboys always jump to criticize it as if it accounts for Microsoft's entire product line.

If you're the type of person that hates Microsoft products, 90% of the time it's because you don't know how to configure and maintain them, and you'll be even worse off with a Linux based OS.

tl;dr? Tell your friend to get XP and learn how to use a computer.
