Is there any meaning behind the name?

Well you got it have right. Compute is usually involved in mathematics... numbers, adding, multiplying etc. Back then, thats what computers were for. Thus compute (verb) and ers (now its a noun)

Yes, computers were once used for "computing" math problems. Believe it or not, the computers have only been majorly devoloped 4 times.
There used to be a HUGE computer, and could only solve a few math problems at a time. That one was underdeveloped
The next one could do them faster. There was a moth in the open hard drive and caused errors and thats where "bugs" came from.
The next one could do multiple math problems in under a split second. This one was more developed and smaller
The ones we use today are compatible with multiple OS and such.
Theres some not-so specific history for you.

Latin roots computus and computare meaning calculate. The two roots are the English equivalent of compute.
