Iv'e been set the task of finding the steps a byte on data follows to get from a usb, to a display and i have an idea of how these processes work

From my interpritation:

1-USB inserted

2-RAM is sent a temp file giving the user a idea of the locations of files within the flash drive

3-User Opens the word document that the number(Bytes) is stored in

4-GPU processes the location of the number on the screen and sends to display

5-USB is accessed and document is brought through cache L1 and L2 to instructional cache

6-User changes the number and the CPU handles the process required to get from input from Keyboard to a temp change in the document and then a display of the new number. if that makes sence...

7-User saves the document and the file is overwritten on the USB

8-The files is closed and the USB is ejected.

Is this the right idea

If not can someone tell me where iv'e gone wrong >_>

Thats the right methodology, and those steps do take place.
It is very generalized what you have put though, what detail do you need etc?...
