There shouldn't be really any consequences if you don't use a firewall.
Routers have the best firewall, and Windows has a firewall that does the job just fine.

As previously stated, just get a router. A firewall isn't good for much other than attempted hacker attacks, to the extent of my knowledge.
Just don't go giving out your IP to everyone you see, and you probably won't have much of a need for a firewall.

| winxp firewall sucks. The best firewall is indeed your router's firewall. Then if you want even more security install a software firewall. Zonealarm is the best one.

you're right. winxp firewall REALLY sucks.
it doesn't keep hackers out. al it tries to do is blocking multiplayer games, and THAT doesn't even work!
so really, GET A ROUTER!

Windows XP's firewall blocks inbound packets. So yes, it does "keep the hackers out." (Do you know what a firewall really does?  )
