Ask them. You can't unless they have wireless and you connect to it.

Just curious... Why would you want to know? you could setup a website, request them to go to it, and make it log there IP in the access.log file...
I can help you if you tell me why

And why in the world would you want to know if their modem was pass-word protected? Lol.
Yeah, there isn't really a way apart from the above mentioned i.e.
1. Make a web, request them to go on (You could use an excuse like 'its my first ever web and i just wanted to see it it works...' etc.) and check the IP Log.
2. If they have a wireless network, access it and find out from there.
3. Ask them.

add them to msn send a file of 15mb+
go to "Run" Cmd/command and type "netstat"
it will write something like "msn messenger hotmail.com + the ip"
